The University of Sibiu hosts one of the 715 UNESCO Chairs and 69 University Twinning and Networking Programme UNITWIN Networks established established within in 131 countries, and involving over 830 institutions. The Chairs and Networks provide an innovative modality for international academic cooperation, particularly with North-South and North-South-South dimension, and for capacity development.
The Bilateral Agreement signed by Director General of UNESCO, Ms Irina Bokova and Rector of Lucian Blaga University, Prof Constantin Oprean in January 2011, established the UNESCO Chair as a new teaching and research department at Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu. The Chair is formed around interested extant academics and researchers from LBUS and partnering institutions, students and faculty pursuing post-graduate studies and training, visiting professors, experts and guest speakers involved in the UNESCO Chair research and activities. The purpose of the Chair is to develop and promote an integrated system of research, training, information and documentation under the broad perspective of lifelong learning and quality assurance and management. It serves as a means of facilitating collaboration between researchers, teachers, student services departments, career counsellors, quality assurance and curricula development offices of all higher education institutions in Romania, Central and South East Europe.
The mission of the UNESCO Chair of LBUS is to build capacities, promote and cooperate with other HEIs in Central and South Eastern Europe on identifying and sustaining actions needed for the strengthening of higher education-graduate employment/employers links, the increased assurance of the quality of learning and competencies provided by higher education in the country and the region, the provision of skills for lifelong learning as well as the improvement of the employability rate among graduates.
